Ground Penetrating Radar Used for Utility Locating at the US / Mexico Border

Ground Penetrating Radar Systems, LLC. of Arizona was contacted by a national contractor to locate all underground utilities for the U.S. Border Patrol fence at the US / Mexico Border in Yuma, Arizona. The contractor was given the difficult task of excavating near the Border Patrol fence line in order to install a new observation post for Homeland Security. This was a highly secured area requiring security escorts from Homeland Security and the need for specialized utility locating techniques due to the site having no above ground utilities.

Conventional utility locating is done by transmitting a signal through accessible above ground utilities. With the highly secured location, all utilities boxes were inaccessible and/or welded closed. Without this access, GPRS, LLC. arrived on site to provide digital underground imaging (Ground Penetrating Radar) as well as the use of signal induction solutions to locate all underground utilities. GPRS was able to successfully scan over 7 miles of US Border Patrol fence line, providing accurate details of where all power lines were located.

Ground Penetrating Radar was ideal on this site as it allowed for our technician to visually see underground utilities. Each utility could also then be detected and confirmed through wireless signal induction.
